A podcast about knitting and books I have read.

Welcome to Episode 13. Today I am announcing my yearlong project for 2018:

PhotoshopScreenSnapz003

November 11th is Remembrance Day in Canada. On PEI most businesses were closed. The Charlottetown Farmer’s Market was open but had a short service and a moment of silence. Remembering the sacrifice of those who didn’t come home, the service of those who did and honouring those who still serve.

FO

An 8×8″ blanket square for The Knit Together Project coordinated by Melissa of Knitting the Stash. I got the needles from Kate of Hawthorn Cottage Craft. I was so excited that I was the first one who contacted her on Ravelry. She was so quick to send me her package, even before she left for her adventure to Canada and the New York Sheep and Wool Festival. I showed my package before it was so sweet. Thank you Kate.

I made my square using reversible cables that Fiona Alice taught me at Knit East 2015. It was my first Knit East and my first classes in knitting that I remember. On a side note, it was also the year I took courses from: The Yarn Harlot and Fiona Ellis. I chose to use Fleece and Harmony yarn because their passions are:

  1. To raise animals the natural way, on the pasture.
  2. To hand-craft every detail, in every small batch of wool.
  3. To ensure our fibres come from a good place. Like our backyard.

They are a wonderful company and they have been so supportive of me in my design journey. Jennifer chose one of their new fall colors to feature “The Catch”. I love how the colours are reflected in our environment. The catch refers to our fishing heritage. I grew up in a farming a fishing community. My Granddad fished for as long as I remembered. I love being out on the water and catching fish to eat later that day. It is such a fun project. I am mailing my packages as soon I as block my square and it dries.

HO

I also have a half-finished object. It is the mitt I stated in Fiona Ellis’ class this year at Knit East. I love the Woodland Leaves Pattern she gave us in class. Her designs are so easy to follow and I love the charting. I am still working on just reading charts. Mostly before I took my first classes I just read the text or looked at a picture and made things.

My yarn was Fleece and Harmony Signature yarn. A 100% untreated wool in 3 ply worsted weight in a 60% Wool, 40% Corriedale mix. I used oyster and gale. I think they make such a beautiful mitten with oyster on the cuff and gale on the trim and hand parts.

New ebook — CAWcreations 2018 Knitting Calendar eBook of Patterns

The electronic version of the 2018 Knitting Calendar featured patterns is now live on Ravelry at an early bird price of $25 CDN. I am getting a few printed copies of the desk calendar featuring 10 different patterns. I am still working out all the details of selling the desk calendar and the ebook. However, the Cheryl Ann edited penultimate draft is posted in .pdf. It will be updated on January 01, 2018 when my test knitters have finished editing. I sometime forget to add important aspects of the pattern. My test knitters are my final editors. Once the final edits are in the price of the calendar will go up to the regular price.

WIPs

Socks from a sock blank of Ravens Wood Fibre Company at Knit East 2017. I love the colours. It is so fun. I cannot wait to finish these.

My Fleece Artist Canada 150 colors and the story behind me choosing the Banff colourway.

Planned hat for my goddaughter. Or how to make a sparkle base out of a non-sparkle skein.

Books

Calculating God by Robert Sawyer. Love it but I am not getting much time to read.

Audiobooks have been a godsend as I can knit and listen. I do listen on 1.5 speed so I miss some things and I do not enjoy books as much as when I read them. Maybe I need to get a good bookstand.

KALs

Now until Christmas my Baby KAL is underway. You can use any of my baby patterns: Zig Zag Baby Cardigan, Baby Pants, and/or the Hap(py) Shawl. Let’s be real for a minute. I probably will not close the KAL on Christmas; it will be closer to the new year. Some of the Bayview Fiber Arts mini and progress keeper will be a prize, and a free pattern from CAWcreations will be the other one.

Upcoming KALs

2018 Knitting Calendar KAL and chatter will start in January.

I will also be, creating a Beach Day Cowl that will be used in classes next year. Anyone who takes the class will be eligible to enter, as long as they join the CAWcreations group on Ravelry.

Happy Knitting.

Helix socks as a homage to the Stashbusting Helix Hat by Jessica Rose. Used Fleece and Harmony Signature yarn in Take the Ferry, Lupine, and Lilac. I made a mistake on the first sock, but figured it out on the second sock. I show the difference which explains why you do not need to wrap yarn when using the Helix pattern.

Stitch Markers to go in Sock kits.

Book

Dark Matter by Crouch. A dark science fiction story. The characters are engaging pulling you into the story quickly. I love how the science is explained well without making the reader feel lectured to. The plot moves fast and the story is so good. Read it to see if you agree.

Fleece and Harmony sells patterns by CAWcreations and Sand and Sky Creations.

FOs
1:12 Hap(py) Shawl by CAWcreations. Purchase pattern through Fleece and Harmony. Used Fleece and Harmony’s fingering yarn in Strawberry fields and Rhubarb colours. The needles used were 2.5 mm (US 1 1/2)  Knitters Pride Karbonz (Everyone else uses 3.5 mm to get the same gauge. I am odd.) I did not like the needles because the tips kept twisting off the cord and the yarn kept catching on the tips. I do not have this problem with my other Knitters Pride needles just these tips.

WIPs
4:02 Grand Central Socks by Knitting Expat Designs in Good Karma Farm Sox yarn. Using a 2.75 mm (US 2) needle.

5:30 Gavin’s Blanket a CAWcreations pattern in Knit Picks Dishie yarn. Using 4.5 mm (US 7) needles for a gauge of 4 stitches and 5 rows = 2.5 cm. Not much progress. In the bag by Michelle Holland. Love the size. Fits the entire throw.

6:12 Ixtapa by Kirsten using Euroflax sport weight linen. Using 3.5 mm (US 4) Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina to get gauge of 18 stitches and 30 rows = 10 cm in stockinette.

7:00 Seb’s socks new CAWcreations sock pattern with reversible cables on top. Finding the two at a time socks take MUCH longer to make. Used MyColourWheelhouse yarn in flaming orange.

8:18 Heart on Your Sleeve Ironheart sweater in Knit Picks Gloss DK. It is the cranberry colour. Using my Addi Turbo 4 mm (US 6) needles for this project.

9:00 Apple Blossom Socks in Lisa Sousa’s 2016 Rhinebeck color with Annie Purl’s I want your socks grey sparkle cuffs, heels, and toes. Using a 2.25 mm (US 1) circular needle. In my Dr. Who bag by Sue from The Tangled Skein CA on Etsy.

10:05 Knitting I entered in the provincial exhibition. Got first place for two piece baby set (Zig Zag Baby Cardigan, and Baby Pants/shorts), and third place for the Beach Day Shawl all are CAWcreations patterns designed for Fleece and Harmony.

12:35 What is new in my world: Roadtrip with Tim, taxi for children (young adults), start teaching this fall, and plan at least once a month podcast

Book
14:07 Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay.

“Inspired by the glory of Tang Dynasty China in the eighth century, Guy Gavriel Kay melds history and the fantastic into something both powerful and emotionally compelling. Under Heaven is a novel on the grandest narrative scale, encompassing the intimate details of individual lives in an unforgettable time and place.” http://brightweavings.com/ggk/books/books/under-heaven/

Great story loved the characters and social commentary. The ghosts were great too.

16:07 Stash Enhancement
Lang Yarn cashmere sock yarn in blues. It appears to be discontinued. Too bad I like it.
Green Gables Alpacas yarn pastel rainbow skein. So soft. Love it!!

17:30 Trip Pictures
18:10 Outtakes — could not remember Sue’s name to talk about my project bag she made me. Yep that is why I normally record during the day.

Fleece and Harmony, knitting

Accidental Test for Colourfastness of Fleece and Harmony Yarn

A couple of weeks ago, it was a rainy dark drive home from knitting. When I finally go home, I grabbed my knitting bags and dashed through the rain to my door. I was tired so I headed to bed shortly after, sleeping through a wild rainstorm.

The next morning I looked out and there was my knitting bag sitting out in the rain. It had sat out all night with my Fleece and Harmony Strawberry fields yarn inside. How careless had I been. I was test knitting a shawl for Fleece and Harmony. I ran outside and grabbed it. I expected my project bag to be pink or IMG_2147red and the project to be ruined. It was soaked through.  My bag looks great. The colour did not run at all. The white is still white.

My project is fine. I was floored. What a great dye job. It did not run at all.

Later I finished another project, that had yellow to a midnight blue. When I soaked it wool wash, the water was clear. Fleece & Harmony’s yarns are colorfast.

I am so excited to know that any color combinations can work and the colors will not run into each other.

Have fun combining any colors that you want. You can be confident the colors will not run.

Happy Knitting!
